TotalEnergies Graphite Suspends Vatomina Mine Production to Optimise Plant Performance and Recovery
TotalEnergies Graphite has temporarily suspended production at its Vatomina graphite project in Madagascar to focus on operational improvements and optimise the performance of the processing plant.
The company said the decision was made to allow technical teams to address challenges affecting plant efficiency and improve overall recovery rates.
The optimisation programme is aimed at strengthening long-term production performance and ensuring the operation can meet its future targets.
During the suspension, TotalEnergies Graphite will focus on reviewing processing performance, implementing improvements and refining operating procedures at the facility.
The Vatomina project is one of Madagascar’s emerging graphite operations and is positioned to supply a growing global market for graphite, a critical mineral used in lithium-ion batteries, electric vehicles and energy storage technologies.
The company said it remains committed to the project and believes the optimisation work will create a stronger foundation for sustainable production.
Once improvements are completed, operations are expected to resume with enhanced efficiency and improved reliability.
The temporary halt comes as graphite producers worldwide face increasing pressure to deliver consistent output while responding to changing market conditions and rising demand for battery minerals.
Madagascar has become an important player in the global graphite industry due to its high-quality deposits, and projects such as Vatomina are expected to contribute to efforts to diversify graphite supply chains outside major producing countries.
