Japan’s Mitsubishi Motors is reportedly planning to outsource electric vehicle (EV) production to Taiwanese electronics contract manufacturer Foxconn, according to Kyodo News.
The move aims to reduce production costs and accelerate the development of Mitsubishi’s EV lineup. Meanwhile, Foxconn—officially known as Hon Hai Precision Industry—seeks to establish collaborations with major Japanese automakers like Nissan and Honda.
Mitsubishi Motors denied providing such information, stating that it continues to “explore collaboration opportunities with various partners to achieve sustainable growth.” Foxconn declined to comment.
Last week, Foxconn announced during a quarterly earnings conference that it expects to finalize an EV deal with an unnamed Japanese automaker within two months.
The company has also expressed interest in acquiring a stake in Nissan as part of its broader ambitions to expand into the EV market.
A proposed merger between Honda and Nissan—Mitsubishi’s largest shareholder—collapsed last month. Sources told Reuters that Nissan remains open to new partnerships, including potential collaboration with Foxconn.
Mitsubishi Motors is also in discussions with Honda and Nissan about developing software for EVs, with an official announcement expected before the end of March.
