Total Graphite Appoints Lycopodium to Update Montepuez Graphite Project Study in Mozambique
Total Graphite has appointed Lycopodium Minerals Africa to review and update the feasibility work for its Montepuez Graphite Project in Mozambique, as the company moves to advance the project towards construction and production.
The project is permitted to produce up to 100,000 tonnes of graphite concentrate a year, with Lycopodium using a modular two-stage development strategy as the base case for the updated study.
The preferred approach would initially establish production of about 50,000 tonnes a year, followed by a second expansion phase as offtake agreements and market demand support additional capacity.
The review will assess the existing process design and flowsheet, potential alternative processing technologies, metallurgical testwork, detailed engineering requirements and early site works. Initial results are expected in November 2026.
Total Graphite said the appointment builds on significant work already completed at Montepuez, including around 60% of the detailed engineering and initial site infrastructure.
The company plans to use the updated feasibility work to support efforts to secure project financing and restart construction in 2027, subject to the outcome of the study and financing arrangements.
Montepuez is positioned to contribute to the development of new sources of natural flake graphite supply outside China, with Total Graphite continuing to advance the project towards production.
