US Investors Step Up Interest in DRC Critical Minerals as Chemaf and KoBold Advance Projects
US companies are showing growing interest in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s critical-minerals sector, with investors pursuing opportunities in mining, exploration and mineral development.
DRC Minister of Mines Louis Watum Kabamba said there was increasing interest from US companies seeking to invest in the country, acquire mining concessions and create jobs.
Speaking in New York on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Watum pointed to recent developments involving Chemaf and KoBold Metals as examples of growing US engagement in the DRC’s mining sector.
Chemaf, which is developing copper and cobalt assets in the DRC, is advancing construction at its operations and is expected to begin production in early 2027.
The company has also taken steps to preserve employment linked to its operations and artisanal mining activities.
Meanwhile, US-based KoBold Metals has begun exploration work in the DRC after securing several exploration permits. The company is using artificial intelligence and advanced geological technologies to identify potential copper, cobalt and lithium deposits.
Watum also confirmed that discussions were continuing with KoBold over the development of a lithium project in Manono, one of the DRC’s key areas for critical-mineral exploration.
The growing US presence follows a strategic partnership between the DRC and the United States focused on critical minerals and infrastructure.
The DRC is seeking to attract investment while increasing local value addition, employment and development from its mineral resources.
Watum said US companies were also exploring opportunities beyond mining, including healthcare, education and artificial intelligence, indicating broader commercial engagement between the two countries.
The developments come as the DRC seeks to diversify investment in its critical-minerals sector and strengthen its position in global supply chains for copper, cobalt, lithium and other strategic minerals.
