Sovereign Metals Pledges Responsible Mining Development During Malawi Minister’s Visit to Kasiya
Sovereign Metals has reaffirmed its commitment to responsible mine development in Malawi, highlighting environmental rehabilitation, community engagement and long-term economic benefits during a visit by Mining Minister Thoko Tembo to the Kasiya project.
Tembo visited Sovereign Services’ laboratory and the Kasiya trial mining and rehabilitation site, where he received an update on progress at the rutile and graphite project.
The Minister stressed the importance of developing mining projects that balance economic opportunities with environmental protection and lasting benefits for Malawians.
He said the government was particularly concerned about the environmental legacy left by mining operations after companies cease production, noting that abandoned mining pits can become significant hazards.
Tembo welcomed Sovereign Services’ approach to rehabilitation and its plans for managing the site beyond mining activities, saying the company’s commitment provided reassurance to the government.
Sovereign Services, a subsidiary of Australia- and London-listed Sovereign Metals, has been developing the Kasiya rutile and graphite project since 2019.
During the visit, the company provided the Minister and his delegation with an update on the project’s development and studies undertaken as part of its definitive feasibility study.
Sovereign Services country manager Maxwell Kazako said the company remained committed to developing Kasiya responsibly while working closely with the Malawian government, local communities and other stakeholders.
He said extensive work had been completed since 2019, including studies supporting the project’s development, while environmental management and rehabilitation remained key priorities.
The visit also highlighted the company’s efforts to integrate rehabilitation into the project from the trial mining stage, reflecting growing expectations that environmental management should form part of mine planning from the outset.
Kasiya is expected to contribute to Malawi’s mining sector through mineral production, investment, local economic opportunities and community development.
The engagement comes as Malawi seeks to expand its mining industry and attract investment into its mineral resources while ensuring new projects meet environmental and social standards.
For Sovereign Metals, continued engagement with government and local communities will be important as Kasiya advances towards potential commercial development.
The Minister’s visit ultimately underscored the importance of collaboration between government and mining companies in ensuring Malawi’s mineral resources are developed responsibly and deliver lasting economic and social benefits.
