Egypt Targets 1GW Industrial Solar Capacity Through New Nationwide Rooftop Initiative
Egypt is planning to install 1 gigawatt (GW) of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity across its industrial sector over the next two years under a newly launched Industry Solar Initiative.
The programme will support the deployment of rooftop solar systems on factories and industrial facilities nationwide as part of Egypt’s broader strategy to expand renewable energy use, reduce carbon emissions, and strengthen industrial energy security.
By increasing the integration of clean energy into manufacturing operations, Egypt aims to reduce dependence on conventional power sources while supporting sustainable industrial growth and improving energy efficiency across key sectors.
Egypt’s Minister of Industry, Khaled Hashem, recently held discussions with Chitose Noguchi, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), to explore deeper cooperation on renewable energy development and sustainable industrial transformation.
The talks focused on accelerating solar energy adoption within the industrial sector and aligning the initiative with Egypt’s wider sustainable development and climate objectives.
The Industry Solar Initiative is being implemented with support from the UNDP and Egypt’s Industrial Modernization Center, while the Global Environment Facility (GEF) is providing financial backing for the programme as part of its broader support for renewable energy projects in the country.
The initiative builds on Egypt’s previous progress in distributed solar energy deployment.
Earlier projects implemented through similar partnerships enabled the installation of grid-connected solar systems across commercial, residential, tourism, and public-sector buildings.
Those efforts contributed to expanding solar energy adoption across multiple sectors and created a foundation for further renewable energy growth nationwide.
