Chile Submits Ollagüe and Laguna Verde Lithium Contracts to Comptroller as Output Expansion Targets 2034
Chile’s Ministry of Mining is preparing to submit two new lithium contracts to the national comptroller in March, marking a further step in the country’s plan to expand lithium production under its national strategy.
The contracts covering the Ollagüe and Laguna Verde projects will be awarded directly and are separate from the tender-based contracts submitted by the ministry in January.
Of those earlier submissions, two were rejected during the review process.
The move reflects a broader acceleration of Chile’s state-led lithium development framework, which seeks to significantly increase national output by 2034.
By combining direct-award mechanisms with competitive tenders, the government is aiming to fast-track project approvals while maintaining regulatory oversight through the comptroller’s office.
Chile, already one of the world’s leading lithium producers, is positioning lithium as a strategic pillar of its energy transition and industrial development agenda, with expanded production intended to reinforce its role in global battery supply chains.
