Toyota Launches New HiLux in Australia with Battery-Electric, Diesel, and 2028 Hydrogen Variants
Toyota has unveiled the latest HiLux, introducing a battery-electric variant for the first time while continuing to offer its trusted diesel powertrain.
A hydrogen fuel cell (FCEV) version is also planned for 2028, part of Toyota’s multi-pathway decarbonisation strategy.
The updated HiLux is set to launch in Australia in December 2025 and comes with a range of improvements in performance, safety, comfort, and design, while maintaining the renowned Toyota quality, durability, and reliability (QDR).
Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia’s Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Franchise Operations, highlighted the vehicle’s enduring reputation.
“Generations of Australians have relied on the HiLux to deliver reliable performance in the toughest conditions,” he said. “The new HiLux builds on this legacy with improved on- and off-road capability, safety, comfort, and a fresh interior and exterior design developed here in Australia.”
The introduction of the battery-electric HiLux underscores Toyota’s commitment to decarbonisation, offering fleets and businesses an eco-friendly option. The hydrogen FCEV, arriving in 2028, further strengthens this multi-pathway approach, reflecting Toyota’s dedication to hydrogen technology.
Variants and Performance
Toyota will offer the HiLux in 21 diesel variants across single, extra, and double cab configurations, 4×2 and 4×4 drivetrains, manual or automatic transmissions, and WorkMate, SR, SR5, Rogue, and the new Rugged X grades. The Rugged X is tailored for off-road use, with protective and recovery-focused specifications.
All diesel models are powered by a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine, producing 150 kW of power and 500 Nm of torque with a six-speed automatic, or 420 Nm with a six-speed manual. Automatic double-cab SR grades and above feature Toyota’s 48-volt V-Active technology for smoother stop-start operation and an extra 8.5 kW/65 Nm boost during takeoff.
The battery-electric HiLux, available in double-cab 4×4 SR and SR5 grades, will launch in the first half of 2026. It will feature dual electric motors—one per axle—powered by a lithium-ion battery, with full technical specifications to be announced closer to release.
Design and Safety Features
The new HiLux boasts a bold exterior inspired by a “Cyber Sumo” theme, designed by Toyota Australia in collaboration with teams in Thailand and Japan. It combines modern style with the ruggedness expected of a HiLux.
Safety has been upgraded with the latest Toyota Safety Sense suite, standard across all variants. Features include pre-collision autonomous emergency braking, active cruise control, lane departure alert, lane trace assist, road sign assist, auto high beam, blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors.
The HiLux also introduces a new cabin detection alert system, which uses radar to detect rear-seat passengers and notify occupants when exiting the vehicle.
With its combination of diesel reliability, electric innovation, and a future hydrogen option, the new Toyota HiLux sets a benchmark for versatility, capability, and sustainable performance in Australia’s light vehicle market.
