Rio Tinto, Eramet, and LG Energy are vying to pioneer lithium extraction technology for Chile’s Salares Altoandinos salt flat, according to Reuters.
Chile aims to exploit the salt flat for lithium mining, and Enami, the Chilean state minerals company, has requested detailed proposals from the contenders.
These proposals must outline the extraction process, ensuring battery-grade quality lithium while addressing environmental concerns like brine reinjection.
Enami’s objective is to assess cutting-edge extraction technologies globally, emphasizing innovation in lithium mining processes.
Both Rio Tinto and Eramet have ongoing lithium projects in Argentina and have expanded their operations to Chile.
Eramet, in particular, acquired salt flats in Chile last year, seeking exploration and mining rights.
While Rio Tinto and Eramet are advancing projects in Argentina, LG Energy’s proposal remains undisclosed, indicating a competitive landscape in lithium extraction technology.
This initiative aligns with Chilean President Gabriel Boric’s strategy to enhance state involvement in the lithium sector and transition away from traditional evaporation ponds to experimental direct lithium extraction methods.
