IONNA and Toyota Motor North America (Toyota) have announced Toyota’s investment in IONNA, joining seven other automakers to bolster the development of a robust DC fast charging network for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) across North America.
This partnership will grant Toyota and Lexus customers access to IONNA’s growing network of DC fast chargers, slated to begin deployment later in 2024.
IONNA’s ambitious plan includes installing at least 30,000 charging ports throughout North America by 2030. These stations will feature both NACS and CCS connectors, ensuring compatibility for all BEV drivers.
“We are thrilled to support IONNA in deploying DC fast chargers across the U.S. and Canada,” said Ted Ogawa, president and CEO of Toyota Motor North America.
“This initiative will not only accelerate the adoption of BEVs and enhance customer confidence in the technology but will also provide Toyota and Lexus owners seamless access to IONNA’s expanding charging infrastructure in North America.”
Aligning closely with Toyota’s commitment to customer satisfaction, IONNA aims to offer a holistic charging experience by integrating amenities and convenience alongside vehicle charging capabilities.
The rollout of IONNA’s initial batch of DC fast charging stations is scheduled for 2024, with continuous expansion planned throughout the decade.
“We are pleased to welcome Toyota to our growing IONNA family,” said Seth Cutler, CEO of IONNA. “Their shared vision for the future of electric mobility in North America perfectly complements our mission to set new benchmarks in quality, reliability, and customer service.
This partnership marks a significant milestone in our collective effort to revolutionize EV charging and drive the adoption of sustainable transportation across the continent.”
Toyota’s collaboration with IONNA underscores its commitment to establishing a nationwide charging network, bolstered by a coalition of eight OEMs investing in public charging infrastructure.
Toyota joins BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis in supporting IONNA’s ambitious growth plans.
Currently, Toyota offers two mass-market BEVs in the U.S. and Canada—the Toyota bZ4X and the Lexus RZ—and has announced plans for two new three-row BEV SUVs to be manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK) and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana (TMMI).
By 2030, Toyota aims to introduce 30 BEV models globally under its Toyota and Lexus brand names and achieve an annual production of up to 3.5 million BEVs.
