On December 19, the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) released the results of an independent audit of Syrah Resources’ Balama graphite operation in Mozambique.
The operation earned the IRMA 50 certification, signifying compliance with over 50% of the essential requirements across IRMA’s four pillars: social and environmental responsibility, business integrity, and positive legacy planning.
“This report demonstrates that mines supplying materials essential to the renewable energy transition can point to transparent, independent evaluations of their environmental and social performance,” said Aimee Boulanger, Executive Director of IRMA.
The environmental audit assessed several key areas, including waste and materials management, water usage, air quality, noise and vibration, greenhouse gas emissions, and biodiversity conservation.
Balama successfully met the standards in all evaluated topics, reflecting its dedication to environmental stewardship and community well-being.
Syrah Managing Director and CEO, Shaun Verner, emphasized the significance of this achievement:
“Achieving IRMA 50 is a significant milestone for Syrah in our commitment to operate in line with international best practices for responsible mining.
This accomplishment is a first in the global graphite industry and highlights nearly a decade of strengthening our differentiated ESG performance.
Balama’s strong safety record, investment in workforce training, community development, human rights due diligence, legal governance, stakeholder engagement, and environmental sustainability are core to this success.”
The IRMA 50 certification underscores the importance of responsible mining practices in advancing the renewable energy transition while fostering meaningful local employment and community development.
Syrah’s achievement sets a benchmark in the graphite industry, demonstrating the potential for mining projects in Mozambique to prioritize both environmental and social responsibility.
