Zimbabwe currently holds the largest share of lithium deposits in Africa, backed by significant Chinese investments.
However, Nigeria is determined to stake its claim in the global lithium market. By 2030, Africa is expected to supply 20% of the world’s lithium, attracting growing interest from international investors, according to Segun Tomori, special assistant on media to Dele Alake, Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development.
During an XSpace session hosted by TheCable on Monday, Tomori emphasized lithium’s rising global demand due to its crucial role in electric vehicles, solar panels, and green energy technologies.
“Lithium is the biggest attraction for global investors. It tops the list, followed by gold, nickel, and cobalt. We are already seeing the emergence of lithium processing plants in Nigeria,” he stated.
In 2023, China’s Ming Xin Mineral Separation Nig Ltd. was selected by Kaduna State to build Nigeria’s first lithium-processing plant, with plans to manufacture batteries for electric vehicles (EVs).
Meanwhile, in 2022, the Nigerian government rejected Tesla’s proposal to purchase raw lithium, citing new mining policies that require some level of local processing before export.
“Our mining policy mandates value addition to raw minerals, including lithium, before export. This creates jobs and builds industries,” said Ayodeji Adeyemi, special assistant to the Minister of Mines and Steel Development.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has also expressed interest in partnering with Nigeria to develop critical minerals, particularly lithium, to support the green energy transition and EV battery production.
Nigeria is rapidly expanding its lithium processing capabilities. In 2024, a second lithium factory was inaugurated, with a third currently under construction.
As the country accelerates its lithium industry, it is positioning itself as a key player in the global clean energy transition.
