Manganese Metal Company (MMC), a leading producer and exporter of manganese, has awarded a contract to crystallization and evaporation specialists JordProxa Africa to supply a crystallizer plant for producing high-purity manganese sulfate monohydrate (HPMSM) in Mbombela, Mpumalanga.
This agreement follows years of discussions and an intensive nine-month collaboration involving extensive laboratory testing and conceptual engineering.
MMC recognizes the growing importance of high-purity manganese in battery chemistries and is committed to supporting South Africa’s development of HPMSM production.
As the world’s largest producer of manganese ore, South Africa stands to benefit from increased local beneficiation through this project.
Crystallization technology plays a critical role in meeting the stringent purity requirements for lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles and renewable energy storage.
“The crystallization plant is a key enabler for MMC to expand our customer base in the lithium-ion battery sector and enhance South Africa’s role in the global energy transition.
By adding HPMSM to our product portfolio in Mbombela, we can leverage our existing infrastructure, strong brand, and global expertise to secure market access in a short time,” said MMC CEO Louis Nel.
JordProxa Africa Managing Director Johan Liebenberg added, “We are excited to contribute to a project that will significantly reshape the global HPMSM supply chain beyond China, helping to create a more diversified and resilient critical materials market.”
