IMPACT and Congolese non-profit Action pour la Défense des droits humains (ADDH) have launched the Mapping Payments project, which aims to tackle corruption in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) artisanal cobalt sector.
The project will map all taxes and fees supply chain actors are legally required to pay, in an effort to combat the smuggling, extortion, and debt bondage encouraged by high taxes and complex administrative burdens.
The project will compare the artisanal cobalt sector with the DRC’s artisanal gold supply chain and build on IMPACT’s previous work in the region.
The project is funded by the European Union, with Microsoft providing additional funding for related activities.
