In an exciting development, the Manono Lithium project, located in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has received an exploration license from the DRC Ministry of Mines.
This project is a joint venture (JV) named Manono Lithium, involving a subsidiary of Zijin Mining Group and La Congolaise d’Exploitation Minière, a DRC-based firm.
Under the terms of the JV agreement, the exploration, construction, and operation of the Manono project will be led by Zijin’s subsidiary, Jinxiang Lithium. Jinxiang Lithium is tasked with securing internal and external funding for the JV.
Their immediate goals include conducting a comprehensive geological exploration and a feasibility study. Once these initial stages are completed and financing is in place, the project’s construction is expected to take approximately two years.
The ambitious vision of the JV partners extends beyond the lithium exploration itself. They have plans to establish an industrial park dedicated to lithium smelting in the DRC, with an emphasis on sustainable practices.
The DRC is home to one of the world’s most significant lithium, cesium, and tantalum pegmatite deposits, making it a valuable resource for lithium production and other valuable minerals.
Moreover, the project aligns with sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. Zijin has secured rights for the restoration and operation of the old, decommissioned Mpiana-Mwanga hydropower station, located near the project area.
This hydropower station will provide a clean and low-carbon energy source for the Manono project, emphasizing the commitment to reducing the environmental impact of the venture.
The Manono Lithium project represents a significant step toward responsible lithium exploration and processing, furthering the development of a valuable resource while minimizing its environmental footprint.
