The Malawian government has imposed a temporary ban on all mineral exports to allow the Ministry of Mining to streamline procedures and improve regulatory frameworks.
In a notice published in the Daily Times newspaper, the ministry stated that the suspension aims to enhance regulations that support both the mining sector and the country’s economic growth.
Malawi, one of the world’s poorest nations, heavily relies on agriculture, with tobacco being its primary source of foreign exchange. However, mining is emerging as a potential economic driver.
Among key projects, Rio Tinto-backed Sovereign Metals is developing the Kasiya project in western Malawi, which, if completed, will produce graphite alongside rutile, a key mineral for industrial applications.
The government’s decision reflects a broader effort to maximize the benefits of its mineral resources while ensuring sustainable development in the sector.
