Huayou Cobalt Builds Africa’s First Lithium Sulphate Plant at Arcadia Mine Ahead of Export Ban
In a landmark development for Zimbabwe’s mining industry, Huayou Cobalt’s subsidiary, Arcadia Technology Zimbabwe (ATZ), is in the final stages of constructing a US$400 million lithium sulphate processing plant at its Arcadia Mine.
The project strategically positions the company ahead of the Zimbabwean government’s January 2027 ban on lithium concentrate exports.
This cutting-edge facility is set to be the first of its kind in Africa and only the third in the world. It represents a major step forward in Zimbabwe’s ambition to move beyond raw material extraction and capture greater value from its mineral resources.
The plant is a physical embodiment of Zimbabwe’s broader policy of beneficiation — transforming the nation from a raw material exporter into a manufacturer of semi-processed and finished goods.
The facility will process spodumene concentrate to produce 50,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium sulphate annually — a critical component for lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles and renewable energy storage systems worldwide.
ATZ Managing Director Henry Zhu described the investment as a game-changer for Zimbabwe’s economy:
“This plant creates jobs, stimulates local economic activity, and demonstrates Zimbabwe’s potential as a major player in the global lithium market.”
The plant’s construction has already generated significant employment for residents of Goromonzi District, with further opportunities expected when the facility becomes operational.
In addition to job creation, Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe (PLZ), another Huayou subsidiary, has invested in infrastructure improvements, including a company-funded road construction project that enhances connectivity and attracts further investment to the district.
PLZ’s ESG Director, Yu Long, emphasized the broader economic benefits:
“The road network project in Goromonzi District reflects our commitment to improving infrastructure and supporting economic growth. This investment will have lasting impacts on the community.”
The project strengthens the Arcadia Mine’s role as a cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s lithium industry. Since 2022, PLZ has invested over US$3 million in corporate social responsibility initiatives in the district. These include:
The “Weaving the Future” women’s empowerment project, improving livelihoods and skills training.
Construction of classroom blocks at Vhuta Primary School and provision of furniture and textbooks to multiple schools.
An “energy equity” project supporting youth entrepreneurs.
Skills development programs in welding, electrical work, and forklift driving to combat youth unemployment and drug abuse.
Construction of a police base in Ward 13 to enhance community safety.
Community leaders have expressed deep appreciation for these initiatives, noting their transformative impact on local lives and opportunities.
Huayou Cobalt’s global reach further strengthens the project’s impact. The company’s recent accession to China’s Green and Low-Carbon Advanced Technology Innovation Platform ensures that Zimbabwe’s lithium production will meet the highest international environmental and technological standards.
This positions the Arcadia plant to supply battery-grade lithium sulphate to leading electric vehicle manufacturers worldwide.
