In a significant milestone for electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, British public transport operator First Bus has launched the UK’s first publicly accessible bus charging depot.
Located at Summercourt depot in Cornwall, this purpose-built hub offers direct access to rapid electric charging infrastructure for electric cars and vans.
The Summercourt depot features eight rapid charging stations capable of charging up to 150 kW, providing locals and visitors with convenient access to EV charging. The depot is operational from 6 am to 10 pm every day of the week.
Charging prices are set at 69 pence per kilowatt-hour (kWh), and customers can pay using contactless credit cards without the need for signing up for a service or downloading an app.
First Bus has invested approximately £1 million in constructing the bus depot, strategically located along the A30 corridor, a key tourist route into Cornwall.
Simon Goff, Managing Director of First Bus South, expressed excitement about the decarbonization journey and the significance of the Summercourt hub.
He emphasized the importance of providing EV drivers with reliable and affordable charging infrastructure, stating, “We’re the first bus operator to offer consumer charging, and I’m proud that we’re able to support the local community with this vital infrastructure that will make a difference for many years to come.”
