President Tshisekedi Highlights US Mining Deal as Catalyst for Green Economy and National Growth
On the 65th anniversary of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s independence, President Félix Tshisekedi addressed the nation on Monday, June 30, 2025, reaffirming active negotiations with the United States to finalize a strategic mining agreement.
The deal is set to strengthen the DRC’s position as a key player in the global energy transition and the emerging green economy.
“This agreement will mark a decisive step in positioning the DRC as a central player in the global energy transition and the emerging green economy.
It aims to develop our strategic minerals—particularly copper, cobalt, and lithium—under sovereign control, while ensuring a fairer distribution of economic benefits for the Congolese people,” Tshisekedi stated.
According to the president, the agreement reflects renewed international confidence in the DRC, thanks to recent reforms in justice, the economy, and anti-corruption—efforts aligned with strengthening the rule of law.
Tshisekedi emphasized that the upcoming agreement will not only secure mineral exports but also promote local processing, job creation, and a new economic model focused on national sovereignty and value addition.
“This is the fruit of collective, determined work, in the service of a single ideal: to offer every Congolese man and woman real prospects for a better future,” he affirmed.
The announcement comes just days after the anticipated signing of a peace agreement between the DRC and Rwanda, scheduled for Friday, June 27, in Washington.
Thomas Pigott, Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, remarked that regional peace is essential to unlocking economic development and sustainable investment in the sub-region.
