Copper 360 has officially commenced underground mining operations at the Rietberg Mine in South Africa’s Northern Cape Province, marking the first copper production in the O’Kiep Copper District in over four decades.
With a history dating back to the early 20th century, the Rietberg Mine has substantial copper reserves and was operational until its closure in 1983.
Its reopening is anticipated to significantly benefit the local economy by generating jobs and supporting community initiatives.
The revival of the mine is part of Copper 360’s Cluster Mining Model, which aims to reactivate several historically dormant mines in the region.
These mines, previously developed by Newmont and Gold Fields, feature defined ore bodies and existing underground infrastructure.
Copper 360 holds mining rights over an area of 19,000 hectares, identifying 12 mines and 60 historical prospects, each supported by a comprehensive dataset.
Copper 360 CEO Jan Nelson expressed excitement about the commencement of mining activities at Rietberg, stating, “This is an exciting moment for us and the culmination of several years of planning. While it marks a milestone for Copper 360, it also signals the beginning of a new era for the Northern Cape.”
