The price of cobalt has experienced a slight decline on the global market, according to the Ministry of Foreign Trade’s export price list for the period from March 31 to April 5, 2025.
The price of cobalt per tonne dropped to USD 33,547, compared to USD 35,110 the previous week.
Cobalt prices have been volatile throughout March. The price per tonne began the month with an upward trend, rising from USD 21,282 between March 3-7, to USD 23,251 between March 10-15.
A notable increase occurred between March 24-29, when the price surged from USD 26,571 to USD 35,110 per tonne. However, the price saw a slight 2% decrease for the week of March 31 to April 5.
In response to fluctuating prices, the Congolese government continues its decision to suspend cobalt exports in order to control its supply on the global market and increase the value of the strategic resource. This measure aims to prevent an oversupply of cobalt, which had previously led to a decrease in its price.
During the 36th Council of Ministers, President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi reaffirmed the government’s stance, recommending the continuation of the export suspension until the period set by the regulatory authority concludes. Following this period, experts will reassess the situation to determine whether the suspension will be lifted.
To further improve cobalt supply management, the Congolese government is exploring collaboration with Indonesia, the world’s second-largest producer of cobalt.
The goal is to learn from Indonesia’s experience in refining supply strategies for international markets.
