A delegation of Paramount Chiefs from Mankessim, Nkusukum, Abura, Dominase, and Ogua has urged Ghana’s Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, to address regulatory delays stalling the Ewoyaa Lithium Project.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the Omanhene of Mankessim, Osagyefo Amanfo Edu IV, expressed serious concern about the prolonged inaction.
He warned that Ghana risks missing out on the economic benefits of its lithium reserves if the project continues to stagnate.
He cited the global drop in lithium prices—from US$4,000 per tonne in 2022 to approximately US$800 today—as a major concern.
He noted that continued delays could erode investor confidence and jeopardize potential returns.
Although the Minerals Commission issued a moratorium in December 2023, the mining lease is still awaiting parliamentary approval, leaving the project in limbo.
The Chief stressed that over 2,000 hectares of land have remained unused for nearly 16 months, disrupting farming activities and livelihoods in local communities.
While key preparatory steps—such as compensation negotiations and the formation of resettlement committees—have already been completed, bureaucratic delays are preventing the project from advancing.
The Omanhene urged the Minister to expedite the approval process and remove the final barriers to progress.
In response, Minister Armah-Kofi Buah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to moving the project forward.
He acknowledged the urgency of the situation and pledged to collaborate with all stakeholders to address the outstanding challenges.
Deputy Minister Sulemana Yusif echoed these sentiments, assuring the Chiefs that the concerns they raised were valid and that the Mahama administration is committed to ensuring Ghana fully benefits from its lithium resources.
The Minister also announced that immediate engagements would be held with the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) and Parliament to fast-track the ratification process.
This renewed government commitment is expected to revitalize momentum behind the Ewoyaa Lithium Project and deliver tangible benefits to affected communities and the broader Ghanaian economy.
