Diversified mining group BHP has partnered with Toyota Australia to trial a battery electric Hilux double cab at its Port Hedland operations in Western Australia.
The prototype vehicle will be utilized in various applications typically performed by diesel-powered light vehicles. The trial is set to begin in late November and will last for approximately 12 months, during which BHP will provide feedback to Toyota upon completion.
Toyota Australia President and CEO Matthew Callachor described the trial as an exciting opportunity for both companies and a significant milestone in the history of the Hilux.
“Toyota has long advocated for a multi-pathway approach to decarbonization, and we aim to execute this initiative effectively,” Callachor stated.
He highlighted the collaboration with BHP as a crucial advancement in low-emission technologies, especially in challenging mining environments.
This trial follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two companies in August of last year, which aimed to enhance decarbonization efforts within BHP’s Australian operations.
Geraldine Slattery, BHP President for Australia, emphasized that the group’s goal to electrify its light vehicle fleet and reduce greenhouse gas emissions relies on enabling technology.
“With around 5,000 light vehicles across our Australian sites, we look forward to testing the capabilities of the battery electric Hilux.”
